Europe is the second-smallest continent in terms of area – only Australia is smaller – but the third most heavily populated, after Asia and Africa. Europe has no less than 48 countries with around 710 million people, which is about 11 % of the world’s population. Russia is the biggest country in Europe and the Vatican the smallest, both in terms of area and population.
